Time for a shelter in place adventure

Since we are now under a statewide “Shelter in Place” order in California, I have picked out my adventure for the day. “Going for a walk” is explicitly allowed under the shelter in place order so this qualifies since I dont have to drive anywhere. Plus social distancing should be easy since theres nobody around. I am undecided if I want to bike or hike, right now thinking I will bike the first/last portion and hike the steep part in the middle. My goal is to make to this peak:

This photo is from my front lawn where the peak can easily be seen not too far away. There is a route up to it from the West (to the left) but its about twice as steep as the route up from the East (to the right). I’m not looking for a struggle like that and prefer longer more gradual climbs. Plus the way I have planned gives me an excuse to do a hybrid bike/hike. Sure I could drive the biking portion since Im eventually ending up at a trail head but where is the fun in that? In total it should be about 20 miles and 4500 feet of elevation gain. Thats a real adventure so I am going to set off soon and assume it to take all day.

Good luck out there as the virus continues to impact us all!

I sure hope everyone else understands what “ shelter in place” better than you do.

This is the best time of year in Southern California to do adventures like this too, not to hot yet and plenty of day time light.

He understands it better than you do. As he said, going for a walk is explicitly allowed. The point of the shelter in place  is to minimize close contact with other people (within 6 ft), and it’s in fact easier to do that outside than inside. A lot of doctors think that the main reason that most viruses don’t spread as well in the summer is that people spend more time outside and less time cooped up indoors where it’s easier to transmit the illness.

Going outside for exercise is actually encouraged even under the “shelter in place” order, y ou don’t need to lock yourself inside, the idea is to maintain social distancing.

Where do you leave your bike for the walking part when you do that? Just hope there’s somewhere to lock it by the trailhead?

Yeah I would have just locked it to a pole or something. Not too worried about it getting stolen in a place like that so any amount of locked to something is fine by me there. But I ended up screwing up the chain on the bike so I limped it back home before I got to the trail head. Still did the hike but I just drove there instead.

I would presume driving all over creation is a poor choice given the circumstances. But yeah I can just drive to the trail head since it's still in my neighborhood anyways.

Never go anywhere without that. And usually always take my filter with me because you never know.

Weather was pretty ideal today. Nice and cloudy, not windy, not too hot, and certainly not cold either.

It's why I enjoy living here so much! Despite the multiple roommates and 30 minute drive to a grocery store. At least I've got a view like that, excellent hiking right there, and a 15 minute drive to work.

It ain’t a hurricane or some shit. I’m not endangering myself and others by hiking. Going to the grocery store though, that shit is life and death out there.

Sometimes I feel like a 30-minute drive to the grocery store might be good for me, then I’d have to really plan and not half-ass it.

The spring of ‘98 I rode the hills south of Redlands almost three times a week and managed to be the first rider up and down the Santa Anna River trail (take the 10 to hyw 40 to forest falls). I loved spring riding in SoCal.
